The Adelaide Kids Film Festival is an annual film festival ‘for kids by kids’. A pilot event was successfully held in December 2011, and immediately it became clear that there was demand for an annual film festival which would harness, encourage and showcase the creativity of young filmmakers.

The event is primarily aimed at filmmakers 18 years and under, with submissions of films under 10 minutes accepted in three main categories: Live-Action, Animation and Documentary. It is the organisers aim to ensure that the festival is as accessible to as many entrants as possible. As a result, submissions are free.  There is a minimal charge for screenings and special events  for attendees and filmmakers under the age of 18.

Predominantly existing to screen film submissions from children, the festival also recognises the need to support mentorship and guidance along side a showcasing platform. The Festival will be a feast of screenings, workshops and Q&A’s with special invited guests. Submissions are also open to adult filmmakers who have made a film which is aimed at a youth audience. Alongside films for youth, by youth and films for youth, by adults, the festival will screen an iconic and relevant feature film per day, reminding us all how cinema has the wonderful ability to impact on our lives.

The AKFF has screened at the following locations thus far: Palace Nova East End Cinemas, Adelaide Studios, Adelaide College of the Arts, Hindmarsh Square, Youthoria Cinema, Chaffey Theatre, Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre, Middleback Theatre.  Some films from the AKFF program have been selected to screen internationally in the US, Spain and the UK.

The AKFF sets itself apart from other children’s film festivals in Australia by nurturing and fostering and encouraging young people to make films.  We aim to make international connections for our young film makers by providing them with cultural exchange opportunities and outstanding mentorship programs such as – the “Positive Screen Culture Program” and the “Regional Tour Workshop & Screening Program”

Our mission is to encourage, foster and nurture an appreciation for digital storytelling by young people. We mean to do this by creating a stimulating environment where young filmmakers can mix with professionals, showcasing their work, rewarding their talent and developing their craft in an arena which encourages both critical thinking and the joy of play.

The festival will be accepting film submissions for 2015 in June, so grab a camera, gather some friends, and make a movie!
